Indoor Garden Design – Give Different Plants the Right Focus

Placing Your Plants

Different plants serve different purposes in interior design. Some, called architectural plants are striking plants that excel at being the centre of attention, or the focal point in a room. They are best placed apart from other plants to prevent attention being taken away from them. A popular example is the Yucca.

Specimen plants are those that are substantial enough to stand alone but not striking to the extent of an architectural plant.

Then of course you get the smaller plants that while beautiful in their own right, don’t shout out for attention. If left to stand on their own, they can disappear in the general activity in a room. Group them together and you’ll draw the eye towards them.

Displaying your Plants

When you design your indoor garden, be proud of your plants. It’s nice to have them in a spot where people can see them. This might include putting them in the glow of a light that’s switched on at night time, or near a window sill so people see the plant when the see the view outside.

Grouping Plants

You should put plants in groups of odd numbers because this is always more pleasing to the eye than in groups of even numbers. Try plants of different sizes next to each other to give variation.

Intrigue

If you’re after something different than the ordinary, consider using some unusual house plants to strike up conversation with your visitors. These may be plants that look interesting or those with interesting behaviour such as carnivorous plants.

Terrariums

Terrariums are glass enclosures that can house plants in a self-contained ecosystem. Some terrarium designs are sure to turn heads, like hanging ones such as this teardrop terrarium:
