If you want a healthy organic garden, you have many options. You just have to learn these ways and utilize them.
Allow your children to actively participate in planting your organic garden. Toiling together in the garden brings your family closer together and offers many different opportunities to learn new things and instill green values.
If you are growing plants organically indoors, you have to consider the light that they are getting. If you live in a home or apartment that does not get great sunlight you may want to consider growing plants that are designed to grow in low or medium-light environments. If you want to grow a plant which requires more light, you can invest in grow-lights.
Spacing is essential when planting an organic garden. You can underestimate how much space you need when they are growing. Plants need room for physical growth and for the air to circulate within the soil. If necessary, use a ruler to measure the distance between each plant.
Consider solving your weed problem without the use of toxic chemicals. Pile newspapers on top of each other to kill weeds. In order to grow, weeds need sunlight. If you place sheets of newspaper over the weeds, they will die due to a lack of sunlight. Because newspapers decompose well with the passage of time, they make great additions to compost. Cover the newspaper with a thick layer of mulch for a more attractive look.
A beer trap is an effective way of of dealing with any slugs that invade your organic garden. Bury a single glass jar with the open mouth level with your soil in the garden. Fill the jar with beer within one inch of the top. Slugs are attracted to the beer and become trapped in the container.
Construct raised flower beds of brick, stone, or wood. If you choose wood, ensure that it has not been treated with a sealant or other chemicals. Cypress, locust and cedar usually work best. Avoid using treated wood in an organic vegetable garden. The chemicals in the wood can leak into the soil, and eventually into the plants. If the ground cover you’ve used already contained treated lumber, line it with a barrier of some form.
If you want to sell your crops as organic, you should look into obtaining a certification proving that you are an organic garden. Having certification will increase your sales and verify to your customers that what you are selling is the best produce available.
Take the season and weather conditions into account when determining how much water to give your plants. You will need to water differently depending on what time it is or what kind of soil you are using. An example would be that if you live in a humid and warm climate, then you’ll want to avoid watering the plant’s leaves as this will cause fungus to grow on your plants. Instead, focus water on the plant’s root system.
