There is much more to horticulture than just having something pretty to look at. It’s more than just a simple activity for a green-thumbed hobbyist. Its a way that people can find peace, and feel tranquil. When one is good at horticulture, the rewards are outstanding.
Sod should be laid properly. The soil requires preparation before sod can be laid. Be sure to get rid of any weeds, and then proceed to break up the soil to get it ready to use. Make sure your soil is flat and compacted. Make sure the soil is thoroughly moist. Sod should be staggered in rows, the joints offsetting from each other. The sod should form a flat and firm surface. Fill in gaps with soil. Your sod should be watered everyday for at least two weeks, then it will root itself and walk on it.
Get some horticulture knee pads if you find yourself kneeling on the ground a lot to do your gardening. Your knees will take a beating if you spend a great deal of time on the ground while tending your garden. A set of quality knee pads designed for horticulture can be a world of relief for your central leg joints.
Your vegetable plants need about two or three inches of mulch placed around them. Mulch has a nice moisturizing effect on the soil it’s spread over. It will also prevent the growth of weeds. You’ll save a ton of time if you don’t have to constantly pull out weeds.
Fall Season
Don’t count the fall season out. That doesn’t have to be it though. The fall season is probably the most colorful of the year in terms of foliage. Fall hues of orange, yellow and red can be seen falling from maple trees, and dogwoods and beech trees offer comparable spectacles. When selecting shrubs that will be colorful during the fall, consider hydrangea, barberry, or cotoneaster.
Organic horticulture is a safe hobby to share with your children. Gardens are terrific teaching tools for kids, and provide great opportunities for interaction, growth, and instruction on healthy living.
Do not rush when planting seeds. Start first by moisturizing your soil. You may then distribute your seeds evenly while being sure that they all have adequate space in which to grow. Seeds should be buried about three times deeper than their own size. Some seeds should not be buried at all as they need light to grow.
Maximize your time by keeping your tools close. Use a large bucket, or wear rugged pants with several pockets. Keep your trowel, pruning shears and gloves handy so you can do your garden work quickly and easily.
Use approximately two or three inches of natural, organic material as some mulch in every single flower bed. This is a simple method of discouraging weeds, retaining moisture, and adding excellent nutrients into the garden. This also gives your flower beds a more aesthetic aspect.
Laundry Basket
When it is harvest time, use a laundry basket. The basket strains the produce as well as stores it while you are going through your garden. Rinse off your produce while it’s in the laundry basket, and any excess water will be strained out through the basket’s holes.
