A lot of people work on their garden to relax. Beginning gardeners need to know the answers to questions like when and what to plant, what type of soil is needed and what kind of horticulture equipment they need to purchase. The following article provides answers to many of the questions that are asked by gardeners of all skill levels.
Put down sod correctly. Get your soil ready before you lay your sod. Break the soil into fine tilth and make sure you remove any weeds as well. Make sure the soil is packed firmly and even. Thoroughly moisten the soil. The optimum layout of sod rows is to stagger them with offset joints. After the sod is in place, go over the surface to ensure everything is level. Use loose soil to fill in any gaps between seams. Sod must be watered every day for about two weeks, and then it will have rooted and be completely ready to be walked on.
Choose perennials that won’t be taken out by slugs. Slugs and snails will quickly destroy your garden if you let them. These garden pests prefer perennials with thin, flat, delicate leaves, particularly if the plant is not yet mature. You can discourage snails and slugs from eating your perennials by choosing plants with tougher or distasteful foliage. Good choices in this category are plants such as achillea, campanula, and euphorbia. Heuchera and helleborus also work well.
Your first and best line of defense against pests is having healthy soil. Healthier plants are greater in strength and resistance to illness and insects. To increase your garden’s likelihood of producing strong and healthy plants, use high-quality soil containing minuscule amounts of chemicals, which will eventually collect salts.
Use climbing vines or plants to cover fences and walls. These climbing plants will help beautify an old fence, and they are fast workers too. You can also train climbers to cover arbors and other things that you want covered, and they will even grow right through trees and shrubs. Some require ties attaching them to supports, but others will attach themselves to any surface nearby. Plants such as clematis, wisteria, climbing roses, or honeysuckle are always great choices.
Plants require a good amount of CO2 in order to grow to their maximum height. Most plants grow better in higher levels of CO2. The best way to get a lot of it is through a greenhouse. CO2 levels are usually kept high to get the best growing situation for your plants.
When mowing your lawn do not cut it as short as possible. If you leave some of the grass when you mow, the roots grow further into the ground, which makes the grass less prone to drying and other hazards. When grass is cut too low the roots will not grow as deep, and your lawn may suffer from brown patches.
Make sure you protect any tender deciduous shrubs. If you have them in pots, you need to guard them from cold weather that will damage or kill them. Tie the tops tightly together, and cover the wigwam with a sheet or blanket draped loosely over it. This is better than using plastic to wrap the plant, as more air can circulate.
For weeds that aren’t in the middle of your plants, use boiling water to kill their roots. A pot of boiling hot water can be one of the most safe weed destroyers. Pour hot water right on the weeds, but do not get any on your plants. What this does it essentially kill the weeds by damaging their roots. The result is that those weeds are unlikely to regrow.
